UNSPOILED NATURE

LOCAL CUISINE

Goriški Kras is the name that is used to the part of the Kras in the far north-west of the Karst plateau. In the north, it rises above the fertile Vipava Valley with a chain of hills, the highest peak of which is Trstelj, in the west, it borders the Friuli Plain, and in the south, it leans towards the Adriatic Sea. The common point of the entire area is the wonderful views. These, depending on the selected vantage point, stretch from the Vipava valley and the mountain range that rises between Nanos and Sveta gora across the vast Friuli plain to the Soča estuary and the shallow sea lagoons near Gradež. In the background are the panoramas of the Julian Alps with Triglav; The Carnian Alps, the Dolomites… The eye and the soul are flying.

The wonderful combination of views reflect in the local cuisine, which combines the flavors of the Mediterranean with the influences of Italian cuisine and the Slovenian cooking tradition. Delicious prosciuttos and other meat delicacies dry in the natural draught in the granaries, and in the cellars, the dark ruby-coloured, full-bodied Teran vine matures. All of this integrate beautifully into the landscape of stone homes, fences and carved “kolone, jerte and štirne” and forms a symphony of pleasures in which the eyes, nose, mouth, stomach play equally.

On the cycling trip, we will enjoy all the qualities of the Goriška Karst: we will enjoy both the wonderful views and the beauty of traditional villages and, above all, the tastes of food and drinks from local homesteads.

Tour description:

The starting point is in the village of Kostanjevica na Krasu, the center of which, called “plac” – has been decorated for more than a month with the uniforms of firefighters, policemen and others who participated in extinguishing the big fire. There are already more than 500 of them and still coming! The beautiful scene will be “blown away” by the autumn bora-wind, so it is worth seeing while it lasts.

Partly on the asphalt road and partly on the tracks, we will climb to the first viewpoint on the Renški vrh. The views from it attract us already as we approach the pass and accompany us all the time when descending to the forest path, which will take us along the entire panorama, the so-called Black hills. They are now a bit blacker due to the consequences of a recent fire, but in return they offer many unexpected views, scenes of the original karst stone, a stone landscape transformed with cracks and grooves, young, spring green buds, and in some places also long-hidden and rediscovered remains of battlefields World War I.

While cycling along the extreme northern and western edges of Kras, we will stop in the village of Opatje selo, for a coffee and a small snack, as well as a tour of the “House of Opajska tradition” with displays of whipping and remains from the First World War, and then continue to the viewpoints in the extreme south – west, from which we will have a view to the Adriatic Sea all the way to Gradež and even further, weather permitting.

Until then, the sights will fill our souls, but empty our stomachs, so a visit to the local tourist farm will be more than welcome.

Refreshed, we will cycle through forests and meadows by the village of Hudi Log to Lokvica, where you can see an interesting “štirna” and a particularly well kept watering place for animals – kal, and continue past the World War I monument and the “famous” Borojevič throne back to the starting point at Kostanjevica na Krasu
.

Hilly terrain, ascents and descents can be very long and technically demanding.
Mountainous terrain, very demanding ascents and descents on single tracks, tows or otherwise demanding trails that require a high level of fitness and technical skills.

EASY: Relaxed cycling, suitable for beginners and families who want cycling experiences. There is a lot of time and opportunities on the way to stop and relax, and the terrain is undemanding in terms of altitude – mostly flat or with gentle slopes. The road surfaces are also undemanding – asphalt or well-paved and smooth gravel. As a rule, the lengths of daily sections do not exceed 35 kilometers.
MEDIUM EASY: Suitable for cyclists with an active lifestyle who cycle regularly. The cycling sections are longer and more demanding in terms of fitness. Medium-demanding terrain can also contain longer and steeper ascents and descents. The lengths of daily sections of mostly road-cycling tours are on average between 45 and 75 kilometers, and touring-cycling tours more than 30 kilometers.
MEDIUM DEMANDING: Suitable for occasional cyclists – mostly undemanding cycling, but some days can also contain longer easy ascents or descents or shorter ascents that are more demanding or descents. The lengths of the daily sections are on average between 25 and 55 kilometers per day.
DEMANDING: Suitable for very active and well-prepared cyclists who want cycling challenges that are more demanding. Medium to very demanding terrains can also contain longer and steeper ascents and descents. The lengths of daily road and cycling sections are on average between 65 and 85 kilometers, while touring cycling sections are correspondingly shorter, but at least more than 40 km.
VERY DEMANDING: The most demanding cycling challenges. Suitable for excellent cyclists with high fitness level for longer cycling tours. These can be either typical road-cycling tours with daily sections longer than 85 kilometers or cycling tours on demanding terrains where the daily sections are shorter, but in any case longer than 50 kilometers and demanding in both height gain and surfaces.
