Kras of Gorica – via the fire pits to “Krasna – gorgeous” culinary

on demand

Kras of Gorica – a name that does not exist in books, but colloquially has completely established itself in its environment. Not long ago, it experienced its “big moment”, when the eyes of all of Slovenia and the wider public turned to him for a few days. Unfortunately, not because of happy, but rather tragic events, as a large part of its territory ravaged a fire, estimated to be the largest so far in Slovenia..

Is “the biggest fire in Slovenia” just a tragedy? On the other hand, could it be an opportunity? Did it left behind only devastation, or perhaps some surprises emerged from the ashes? What should he show us and teach us? In addition to fear and uncertainty, there is certainly also a huge amount of pluck, courage, gratitude – an endless range of positive emotions, many of which were buried deep under some other ashes of indifference and alienation. What else did the fires uncover? Among other things, a whole series of stories that remained buried more than 100 years ago, when the First World War ended in these very places. The fires stripped the thickly overgrown forests bare and called new “narratives” to the fore. Today, the burnt-out meadows and forests are telling us about them, and it is good to listen to them. Well, when we we will be tired and hungry from exploring, we will find a pleasant refuge in the Kras’s “borjač”, in the company of the tastes and smells of delicious “Krasna – gorgeous” culinary!

The time to see Kras in the form it had for many centuries, when it was given the name Kras (=stone), is quickly running out, because tireless Nature has already begun its victorious march and draws the colors of spring greenery among the stones and charred trunks. Join us to hear the stories they tell and the emotions that drew them to the plan.

Tour description:

FThe starting point of the trip is in Kostanjevica na Krasu where the headquarters was and the actions were directed from.  The village was strongly connected by the events – during the fire in the center of the village “Na placu” they took care of the food and thirst of the firemen, and today expressions of gratitude in the form of t-shirts come there from all the participating fire brigades. More than 300 have already been collected, and more are expected…

The path will lead us through the forest in the direction of the Renški vrh, where we will be greeted by a view of the Julian Alps and the Dolomites. We will enjoy different views as we continue along the northern slope of the Črni hibi – Black Hills (They didn’t get that name now and because of current events!), too. We will end at the peak, which was during World War I. part of the 6th Soča front. The fire uncovered here the scene of fierce clashes, the remains of which were “exposed” by the fire. “Naked” landscape also shows the places where many shells exploded, which remained buried under the ground for more than 100 years and were activated by the heat, which further hindered the extinguishing of the fire.

We will continue to Cerje, where we find a Monument to the defenders of the Slovenian land with an exceptional vantage point at the top. After the visit, we will descend towards the village of Lokvica, where we will have a real Kras lunch. We will continue through Opatje Selo to Nova vas and on to the Kremenjak lookout point, from where the views open up all around. Just below, it is the village of Jamlje, whose inhabitants had to leave their homes for the longest time because of the fire. We will continue towards the next viewing point, Špik, which used to be closed to visitors for a long time as the viewing point of the Yugoslav People’s Army. When it abandon it, the locals converted it into a pleasant shady resting place…

It is not very far from Špik to the village of Sela na Krasu, from where we will continue to Hudi Log, whose inhabitants were evacuated twice during the fire. From Hudi log, the macadam road leads back to Kostanjevica na Krasu, where we will end our trip.

The roads that we will drive on have been urgently remodeled in some places and forestry work is still taking place on them, so we can expect bad crossing places on the route.

Overall Tour Level:

Mostly flat terrain, only shorter lower hills are possible.
Slightly hilly terrain, ascents and descents are shorter and technically and undemanding for those who are not fit enough.
Hilly terrain, ascents and descents can also be longer and steeper-
Hilly terrain, ascents and descents can be very long and technically demanding.
Mountainous terrain, very demanding ascents and descents on single tracks, tows or otherwise demanding trails that require a high level of fitness and technical skills.
EASY: Relaxed cycling, suitable for beginners and families who want cycling experiences. There is a lot of time and opportunities on the way to stop and relax, and the terrain is undemanding in terms of altitude – mostly flat or with gentle slopes. The road surfaces are also undemanding – asphalt or well-paved and smooth gravel. As a rule, the lengths of daily sections do not exceed 35 kilometers.
MEDIUM EASY: Suitable for cyclists with an active lifestyle who cycle regularly. The cycling sections are longer and more demanding in terms of fitness. Medium-demanding terrain can also contain longer and steeper ascents and descents. The lengths of daily sections of mostly road-cycling tours are on average between 45 and 75 kilometers, and touring-cycling tours more than 30 kilometers.
MEDIUM DEMANDING: Suitable for occasional cyclists – mostly undemanding cycling, but some days can also contain longer easy ascents or descents or shorter ascents that are more demanding or descents. The lengths of the daily sections are on average between 25 and 55 kilometers per day.
DEMANDING: Suitable for very active and well-prepared cyclists who want cycling challenges that are more demanding. Medium to very demanding terrains can also contain longer and steeper ascents and descents. The lengths of daily road and cycling sections are on average between 65 and 85 kilometers, while touring cycling sections are correspondingly shorter, but at least more than 40 km.
VERY DEMANDING: The most demanding cycling challenges. Suitable for excellent cyclists with high fitness level for longer cycling tours. These can be either typical road-cycling tours with daily sections longer than 85 kilometers or cycling tours on demanding terrains where the daily sections are shorter, but in any case longer than 50 kilometers and demanding in both height gain and surfaces.
